A family story
Interview of Isabelle Lozano, co-owner of Apostrophe hotel
Hoosta - Can you explain the concept of your hotel?
Isabelle Lozano: With my parents, we wanted to open a hotel in the 6th arrondissement, the famous district of publishers and booksellers, we wanted a culture hotel but not something intellectual… The idea comes from there, creating a hotel around the concept of writing, in all its forms. Each room of our hotel includes a type of writing.
Hoosta - What are the different writing styles?
Isabelle Lozano: These are the traces, writing with urban graffiti, musical notes, letters of the alphabet, calligraphy, letters or posters, press…
Hoosta - Where does the name “Apostrophe” come from?
Isabelle Lozano: We wanted to apostropher people, to stop them and to talk to them! I would like to thank Sandrine Alouf which collaborates with Vincent Bastie, our architect, because she found the maxim of our hotel: “Add three letters to Paris and it is paradise” . It is a quote written by Jules Renard, a french novelist… Her grandmother repeated this phrase very often!
Hoosta - What type of customer addresses the Apostrophe?
Isabelle Lozano: The Apostrophe hotel is primarily a boutique hotel with a great quality of services. It is aimed at a clientele rather urban, who wants something intimate compared to major luxury hotels, but who can afford to spend 300 € in a room.

Hoosta - What is “Apostropher” for you?
Isabelle Lozano: For me it is interrogating people on a focused point of view. It may be a surprise, a funny detail in a room, which can make them laugh, surprise or give them emotion. It may also be a meeting, a discussion. The aim is to give small pleasures to people staying in our hotel. The Apostrophe hotel is a place of passage, meeting, exchange and rest.
Hoosta - What is story, have been in hospitality business for a long time?
Isabelle Lozano: Yes, this is a family history. My grandparents owned a hotel which was taken up by my father… I am the 3rd generation! It is lasting for more than 20 years! It is a real passion and I wanted for this new hotel something different compared in what is usually done. I wanted to have fun, and build a hotel because it’s pretty rare! This is my 3rd baby, after my 2 children!
Hoosta - Why did you choose the Montparnasse-Luxembourg district?
Isabelle Lozano: Because Montparnasse and Luxembourg are the artists districts of 20’s years. People like Hemingway, Foujita, Modigliani, Kiki of Montparnasse, Gertrude Klein lived there. There also large cafés and bistros such as Le Dome, La Rotonde and la Clôserie des Lilas, which are still at the moment the canteen of many writers ! That’s left bank, the 6th arrondissement, it is mythical.
Hoosta - What amenities will be found in the hotel?
Isabelle Lozano: There are all the traditional services of a hotel with the addition of a mini-hifi for music enthusiasts like myself, DVD player and the possibility to connect your iPod. There are also books available in the rooms… the idea is to feel at Apostrophe hotel as comfortable as home. In the bathrooms we have installed bathtubs massage with changing colors!
Hoosta - Can you describe in a few words your hotel?
Isabelle Lozano: Different and original. I dream he become a classic and a reference!
Hoosta - To conclude, what is your preferred word?
Isabelle Lozano: Soliloque, I find it very nice and very pleasant to say!
